Keeping track of what products you use for your child that have recalls could be a full-time job! There are many websites with quick product recall finders that can make it a bit easier, such as http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prerel.html or http://www.babycenter.com/product-recall-finder. This is a great way to ensure safety, but it may be impossible to check each and every product you use.
May I suggest? The simplest way to keep up with recalls is to complete any and all product registration cards that may be included with your purchases. Once mailed in, the company will notify you of any issues with that product.
I am writing this blog because of personal reasons and not just because I am in the baby retail business. I handed down an ExerSaucer to my cousin for her 4 month old little one. A few weeks later, being a busy Mom, my cousin heard her daughter choking. She ran and found her daughter struggling with some plastic film that had come off from one of the toys she was sucking on. My cousin quickly finger scooped the plastic from her throat and all was fine, Thank God! Much to my chagrin, I then found out that this toy was recalled for this exact problem. Had I filled out and mailed in my registration, I would have known. Not only did my neglect put my children in danger but my cousin’s child as well.
Most major recalls are well publicized, but there is a lot of recalled products still being used in every household. Utilizing these product registration/warranty cards can help reduce this. Before you buy a used baby item from a garage sale or accept a hand me down, Please take the time to check it for a recall. I know many people complain that the US has become “recall happy” and I understand why. However, if being diligent could keep my children safe, then it’s worth all of the efforts in the world!
